Frown lines (otherwise known as glabeller lines) are the vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows and nose when certain facial muscles are engaged i.e. when squinting, concentrating, or expressing specific emotions such as anger or confusion.
These lines become apparent when the muscles responsible for frowning, procerus and corrugator muscles, are activated. Typically, in younger persons lines are only visible during facial activity such as frowning, when this occurs the lines are described as dynamic facial lines. However, as part of the aging process frown lines if not treated early, can become static, meaning they are visible even when the face is at rest.
Botox® injection is typically a very effective treatment to reduce /eliminate the appearance of frown lines. However, the best results with Botox® are achieved when treating dynamic lines (lines only present when frowning etc). For clients who are affected by static and more deeper lines, Botox® in combination with dermal filler can produce a more satisfactory result. It is also possible to make frown lines better without the use of Botox®. Such treatments include microneeedling (Dermapen, Dermastamp and Dermaroller), chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments. However, the best treatment for frown lines is Botox or a combination of Botox and dermal filler.
Avoiding excessive sun exposure / use of sunbeds, not smoking and consuming a diet rich in antioxidants are all factors that can help reduce the appearance of frown lines and avoid premature onset of this cosmetic concern.
