Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) Treatment in London

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by abnormally increased sweating, in excess of what is required for regulation of body temperature. Parts of the body that are typically affected include the face, underarms, scalp, palms of the hands, soles of the feet and chest and groin area. Although primarily a physical burden, hyperhidrosis can impact quality of life from a psychological, emotional, and social perspective.

What causes excessive sweating?

There are two causes of excessive sweating:

  • Primary hyperhidrosis: The cause of this disorder is unclear, but it is typically associated with over activity of the sympathetic nervous system and can be hereditary.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis: Hyperhidrosis that does have an identifiable cause is known as secondary hyperhidrosis. This can have many different triggers, including:
    • Pregnancy or the menopause
    • Anxiety
    • Certain medications
    • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
    • Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
    • Infections

What areas of the body are affected?

Hyperhidrosis can affect specific areas or the whole of the body. The areas affected commonly include the face, soles of the feet, the underarms, palms of the hands and the scalp. Some individuals are affected by hyperhidrosis in the groin or chest region.

What impact does excessive sweating have?

The excessive sweating doesn't usually pose a serious threat to a person’s health, but it can be embarrassing and distressing. It can also have a negative impact on quality of life and may lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.

What treatment options are available in severe cases?

Botox® (Botulinum toxin) is a safe and effective treatment for the management of hyperhidrosis in the following areas: Underarms, palms and fingers of the hands, soles of the feet, scalp, under the breasts and facial sweating. Botox® treatment can achieve approximately 85% reduction in sweating. Results of treatment are usually experienced within two to four days. However, it can take up to two weeks for the full effects to be evident. In most cases repeat injections are required after 3 to 9 months to maintain results.

What are the side effects of this treatment?

Possible side effects of Botox® treatment for hyperhidrosis treatment include bruising and when injected for palmar hyperhidrosis, there can be slight weakness of hand muscles but this complication is rare.

Who performs the procedure?

At Clapham Skin Clinic, Dr Baba, a highly trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who is also a senior trainer for this procedure at London Aesthetic Academy (www.londonaestheticacademy.co.uk) will perform your procedure.
