Individuals who have larger and hypertrophied calves can potentially benefit from calf reduction.
What is the treatment aimed at?
Calf reduction is aimed at slimming the calves.
Non-surgical options of calf reduction include: a. Botox®: This is suitable for individuals who have a large or hypertrophied calf muscle(gastrocnemius) b. Diet and Exercise: These measures especially help if the cause of larger calves is the excessive fat.
The gastrocnemius muscle is the superficial calf muscle that is responsible for bulkiness and the definition of the calf. Botox® is injected into gastrocnemius muscle. This weakens the superficial fibres of the gastrocnemius muscle and the end result is that the muscle becomes thin due to disuse atrophy.
At Clapham Skin Clinic, we follow the following protocol:
We recommend that the procedure should be repeated every 3 monthly until the desired effects are achieved. Following this, maintenance treatment is required 6 to 12 monthly.
There can be an uneven reduction in volume in different areas. Rarely deeper injections can result in spread of Botox® into Soleus muscle that can lead to leg weakness and problems with balancing.
This procedure requires a high level of expertise and experience. At Clapham Skin Clinic, the procedure is performed by Dr Baba, a highly trained and experienced aesthetic doctor who is also a senior trainer for this procedure at London Aesthetic Academy. (www.londonaestheticacademy.co.uk)
